Confidence in Conversations with Patrons Impacted by Gambling: Training for ACT Gambling Contact Officers (GCOs)

Description

This program is an adaptation of Lifeline Canberra's Dealing with People in Difficult situations course, and has been developed specifically for Gambling Contact Officers.

The session provides an in-depth focus on conversational skills, as well as providing knowledge and understanding, empowering participants to confidently engage with and support patrons who are at risk or are already being impacted by gambling harm.

This program is an approved Gambling Contact Officer (GCO) training session under the Gambling and Racing Control (Code of Practice) Regulation 2002.

Course Topics

This course covers the following topics:

  • Conversations and communication
  • Limits and boundary setting
  • Recognise, respond and refer patrons
  • Self Awareness, care and compassion

Key Outcomes

The key outcomes of this course are:

  • Enhanced communication skills with patrons adversely affected by gambling harm
  • Increased levels of confidence in conversations with individuals affected by gambling harm
  • Improved ability to recognise and address individuals that may be struggling
  • Acquire knowledge and skills on how and when to refer individuals to specialised support services and resources
  • Develop strategies for setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries
  • Self-care and self-reflection practices

Who is this for?

The target audience for this course is:

  • The target audience for this course is GCOs only
  • A GCO is the main point of contact for patrons and staff for gambling issues. Each Licensee of a gambling facility must have at least one GCO appointed to their facility. GCOs must have completed an approved GCO training program in the last three years to start or continue in the role. They must also complete an approved GCO training session in each year of appointment.
